An Aberdeenshire farmer has won an HMRC appeal against him at the Supreme Court - to reclaim VAT payments of more than £1 million. Frank Smart, of Torphins, had been embroiled in a court battle with the tax body for a number of years. But judges ruled in agreement with Mr Smart that he should not have paid VAT on a £7.7 million transaction to buy more than 34,000 units of land.
